“St. Elsewhere” star Ed Begley Jr. may be America’s greenest celebrity.

Regularly turning up at Hollywood events on his bicycle, Ed has been considered an environmental leader in the Hollywood community for many years.

According to the actor, what started out as just small changes eventually led to him to living in a self-sufficient home powered by solar energy. Being green is nothing new to him; he’s been doing it for over thirty years.

In an interview with the Breakfast Club, Ed pointed out that April is “Going Green For Us” Month and shared some tips on how to be greener. For example, Ed recommended “taking public transportation, riding a bike, starting a vegetable garden, and using cloth napkins instead of paper.”

The Breakfast Club offered their own recommendation: “If you have a serious boyfriend or girlfriend, just take showers together!”

Ed agreed. “That’s the best way I’ve ever found to take showers!” he joked.

Additionally, Ed said his original decision to go green was a “reaction to growing up in smoggy Los Angeles.”

“The smog was so bad in the 50s and 60s, by 1970 I had a belly full of it, and I knew I had to do something,” he explained.

While he admitted to realizing he wouldn’t be able to change overnight, he said he thought, “I have to do something just to feel better about myself. I’ll start driving electric cars, I’ll start cycling, and I’ll start composting. I’d do everything I could.”

To his surprise, Ed said he ended up saving money by changing to a greener lifestyle — although he also admitted it took him 20 years to switch to solar paneling due to the expensive nature of the project.

And to those who do not believe that humans causing global warming, Ed offered up some words of wisdom: “Even if man is not the main culprit of it, why add to it?”
