By: Renee Grant

Artists including Questlove, Solange, TV on the Radio and more will join together at Yale university for a conference honoring the lives and music of two music legends we lost in 2016, Prince and David Bowie.

The symposium, called Blackstar Rising & The Purple Reign: Celebrating the Legacies of David Bowie and Prince, will run from January 25th through January 28th, where artists and scholars will hold a series of discussions, lectures, and roundtables exploring how Bowie and Prince “championed aesthetic, social, and cultural freedom and rule-breaking in their respective repertoires and ultimately revolutionized racial, gender, and sexual identity politics in popular music culture.”

The festivities open with a concert, featuring a DJ set by Philly’s own Questlove and singer Kimbra. The second day will feature screenings of Ziggy Stardust and Spiders from Mars. followed by a Q&A with the film’s director D.A. Pennebaker, and a keynote conversation with Solange.

Day three sees Blackstar saxophonist Donny McCaslin in a roundtable with Sheila E. called ‘Modern Love’: Bowie & Prince & the Art of Collaboration, while the final day culminates with a concert from TV on the Radio. All events are free and open to the public. For more information on all the events happening during the conference, click here.
