Study Reveals Best Disco Diva Dance Moves

By: Renee Grant

If you feel like an episode of Seinfeld when you step out on the dance floor, there’s hope for you. Those who don’t remember watching Elaine’s painful moves during a party, relive it again and cringe…

Hopefully, you’re a better dancer than this, but if not, there’s hope. A new study from a group of psychologists in the U.K. analyzes the best dance steps to make you into the maven of moves.

Researchers used motion-capture technology to record women dancing to a beat, before turning them into featureless avatars and showing them to both men and women to rate. The results show the most attractive moves as viewed by others. Not surprisingly, hip-swinging and staying on beat were both important factors to being seen as a good dancer. Movement of the arms and thighs are also seen as great moves.

An interesting aspect of the findings is that dance moves may denote underlying factors such as fertility and physical health, leading to men choosing women to dance with that they deem to be more suitable to be a potential partner.

In a similar past study of men, it was found tilting and twisting of the neck and torso were the better moves for the fellas.
