These days, it seems cars from big name stars are a hot commodity; auctions are bringing big bucks for vintage vehicles.
A 1968 Ferrari Dino 206 owned by legendary guitarist Eric Clapton is the latest car to head under the hammer, and this one is expected to set a record.
Clapton has been a huge fan of Ferrari for many years, having owned at least a dozen or so of the Italian-made sports cars in the past 40 years. The vintage wheels going up for auction in early March is one of the first Ferrari cars ever owned by the musician.
According to Clapton’s 2007 biography, George Harrison was the person who sparked his love for the machines, having pulled up to Clapton’s home in a dark blue Ferrari 365 GTC years ago. From there it was love at first sight, with Clapton recalling, “I’d never seen one in the flesh before, and my heart melted.” He didn’t have a license at the time and couldn’t drive a manual transmission, but decided he would learn using Harrison’s car. The rest is history.
Last year, a Dino sold for $770,000. Gooding & Company, the auction house where the car will be sold, estimates Clapton’s Ferrari value to be between $750,000 and $900,000.
