When the world lost music icon George Michael, the shock was palpable. He was just 53 years old.

At the time, his history with drug use was rumored to be involved. Now, almost three months later, a coroner has confirmed that George Michael died of natural causes.

Oxfordshire’s senior coroner Darren Salter found that Michael died of heart disease, specifically dilated cardiomyopathy and myocarditis, as well as fatty liver.

“Inquiries into the death of George Michael have been concluded and the final post-mortem report received,” Salter revealed in a statement to the BBC. “As there is a confirmed natural cause of death, being dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver, the investigation is being discontinued and there is no need for an inquest or any further inquiries.”

The results mean that the singer’s heart was enlarged, weakened and inflamed, unable to pump blood as well as it should have been.

His liver also contained unhealthy collections of fat, a possible side effect of heavy alcohol use.

The Faith crooner was found dead at his home on Christmas Day 2016 by his boyfriend Fadi Fawaz. In the wake of Michael’s passing, Fawaz was questioned by police for five hours. Later, he denied media reports that he was under suspicion over his boyfriend’s death.

Since news of Salter’s decision broke, Fawaz took to Twitter to admonish his detractors who suspected his involvement.

“All the nasty comments, press and 999 (Britain’s emergency services number) were very cruel and unnecessary whatsoever, Now I hope to receive some real LOVE x,” he wrote.
