A Memphis, Tennessee home once owned by Elvis Presley was damaged in a fire on Saturday, April 22nd. The home belonged to Presley in the 1950’s, as he was just becoming the icon we know today.

The house at 1034 Audubon Drive suffered “extensive” damage, but due to ongoing renovations, no Presley memorabilia was inside the home.

Firefighters arrived on the scene just after 7:30AM, and the fire was contained at around 7:52AM. The cause of the fire is said to be electrical, starting inside a wall between the living room and dining room.

The home is owned by music industry veteran and philanthropist Mike Curb, with Rhodes College acting as steward. The Curb Institute for Music at Rhodes hosts small VIP events and private music concerts at the home. Curb purchased the home for $1 million in 2006.

A water pipe burst in the home in January, which was the reason for the renovations. All artifacts from Presley’s time in the house were taken to Rhodes’ campus prior to the renovations.

“The mission is to really research Memphis music in a variety of ways, so we use that house, or we have in the past, as a resource for our students,” says John Bass, executive director of the institute.

Presley purchased the home in 1956 and lived there for just over a year as his career took off, and as fans began to pour into the neighborhood in hopes of catching a glimpse of the star, he left the home to move to Graceland. He was 21 years old at the time.
