While NBC and FOX have been doing live TV musicals for quite some time, ABC hadn’t jumped into the fray. That is set to change this year when the network will premiere two new musicals.

First to air will be The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live, which will be a mashup of footage from the original 1989 cartoon film and live musical performances. The show will feature celebrity singers performing the Oscar-winning songs of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman seamlessly blending into the animated footage.

The two-hour special is set to air on October 3rd.

Adding to the roster of musicals, ABC will also produce Rolling Stone 50, a tribute to the music magazine’s impact chronicling some of the publications most iconic moments. For three hours, the live broadcast will feature a combination of live performances, short films, never-before-seen musical pairings and other surprises.  The show is slated to air on February 7, 2018.

Not to be outdone, NBC has already announced they will be airing Bye Bye Birdie Live in December, and Jesus Christ Superstar Live on Easter Sunday in 2018, while FOX will debut a live musical version of A Christmas Story in December and a live musical production of Rent.
