When Elton John announced in January that he was looking for young, fresh talent to direct videos for some of his biggest hits, no one could have imagined how amazing the results would be.
Elton and Bernie Taupin, who have written some of the most epic songs ever heard, teamed up with YouTube for a global competition to commission videos for Rocket Man, Bennie and the Jets, and Tiny Dancer. Elton and Taupin debuted the winning videos at Cannes Film Festival to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their music partnership.
Elton remarked that he was “moved and amazed” by the videos, as well as the process as a whole. “The future of creativity is clearly collaborative, fusing art and technology, and it’s been fantastic to open up our work to the next generation of creative talent and to share that process with the world on YouTube,” he said.
The winning Rocket Man submission was from Majid Adin, Jack Whitley and choreographer Laura Brownhill won for their Bennie and the Jets interpretation, and Max Weiland was the winner for his Tiny Dancer video.
