When Lionel Richie suffered a knee injury earlier this year, causing him to postpone his tour with Mariah Carey, he says he was in denial about how serious it was.
The workaholic performer admits that throughout his incredible career, he’s been conditioned to push through issues to be able to continue performing, so taking a rest to fix hs knee was hard for him.
“You go into denial and you are like, ‘Oh, OK, I am having a little knee problem, I will just do some more shows and work it out,'” Richie tells ETOnline. “In the old days if you got a little pain, you work it out. Well, the more I started doing shows, what I had was a torn meniscus and the guys said what you do with that is you have to stop, and I didn’t know how to stop.”
While he says he went through a “series of withdrawals” during his hiatus in which his team had to convince him that the injury wasn’t career ending, he says he “feels great” now and is ready to head out on the tour which begins in late July.
