The typewriter may seem like an antiquated form of technology, but there’s something to be said for the clack of the keys. Tom Hanks is a fan of them, and he shares his love in a new trailer for California Typewriter, an upcoming documentary about the old machines.

Hanks launched a free typewriter app for smartphones and is the proud collector of over 250 different typewriters, most of which still work.

Rocker John Mayer is also featured in the trailer, stating, “The typewriter doesn’t judge you. It just goes, ‘Right away sir. However you want it to be.'”

The doc sees typewriter enthusiasts waxing poetic about their virtues, with playwright Sam Shepard and historian David McCollough discussing why they still hold a special place for the machines.

Take a look at the trailer below and be ready to see the doc in select theaters on August 18th. An iTunes release is set for October.
