A minor league baseball team out of Maryland, the Bowie Baysox (pronounced boo-ee), will pay tribute to the late David Bowie by changing their name for one night to the Bowie Baysox (pronounced bow-ee) and wearing some pretty snazzy new jerseys.

This year marks the second in a row that the Baysox have participated in the tribute night.

“When Bowie passed away [in January 2016] it was like, ‘Why don’t we do this?’ It was a Eureka moment and made us wonder what had taken us so long,” said Baysox promotions manager Chris Rogers. “And the huge thing with David Bowie was the many personas he took on. What better way to honor that in Minor League Baseball than with a specialty jersey?

“My enthusiasm was tampered down a bit within the front office,” he says. “But we wanted to make sure we were paying homage, and wanted to make sure they looked good. This year’s jersey design is an amalgamation of a Ziggy Stardust outfit and the Union Jack flag. There’s a lot of red in there.”

The jerseys will be auctioned off during the game and through a post-game online auction. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

Expanding on the theme, each player will have his own walk-up music, tunes from Bowie’s extensive catalog. “And we can punctuate strikeouts with [lyric snippets] “break down and cry” [from “Young Americans”] and “wham, bam, thank you ma’am” [from “Suffragette City”], Rogers says.

Let us know if you plan on taking in the game this Friday night!
