This year’s Global Citizen Festival will feature some of music’s most popular artists, but the newly-announced headliner is a big deal. Stevie Wonder will be the main attraction at the festival on September 23rd in New York’s Central Park.
Also on the bill will be the Chainsmokers, Pharrell Williams, Andra Day, the Killers, Alessia Cara, Big Sean, the Lumineers, and Green Day, with more acts to be announced. Tickets to the concert are free, awarded through a lottery system to those who join the Global Citizen initiative through the website.
Global Citizen is an organization where its followers use their social capital to enact change on issues ranging from education and healthcare to gender equality and climate change. The group aims to “end poverty, tackle climate change and fight inequalities by 2030.”
“In this crucial time, there is nothing more exciting to me than having the honor of giving my gift of song, words and motivation to the Global Citizen Festival,” Wonder said in a statement. “When we commit ourselves to life issues, we are showing love of the Most High. I was, I am and will always be, a citizen connected to the spirit of everyone on this planet moving forward. Let’s go!”
Wonder also performed at the free festival in 2013.
