As we wait patiently for the upcoming Han Solo movie, the man playing a pivotal role, Donald Glover, recounts his time meeting the original Lando Calrissian, Billy Dee Williams.
Lando’s character is one of the most popular in the Star Wars franchise, played masterfully by the uber-cool Williams for several films. This past January, Glover sat down with Williams to discuss his vision for the role; Glover will be playing the young version of Lando in the film, which is still in production.
Glover says Lucasfilm arranged the meeting, and Williams says he and Glover “just sat and talked, and I didn’t want to impose on anything he wanted to do—he’s got his own ideas, I would imagine.”
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Glover detailed his side of the meeting, saying, “I was like, ‘I’ve always felt like this character could do this, and he represents this, and I kind of feel like he comes from here, and it’s very obvious he has a lot of taste, so maybe he grew up seeing that from afar? Because I’m like that. Maybe he saw it from other planets and was like, ‘I want to be that.’
“He just let me ramble on and on, and then finally I was like, ‘So, what do you think?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, I don’t know about all that. Just be charming.'”
No release date has been announced for the beleaguered film, which has recently changed directors. Ron Howard is now at the film’s helm.
