After more than a year of rehabilitating his damaged hearing, Brian Johnson returned to performing AC/DC songs live when he joined Muse onstage to sing Back in Black at Reading Festival on Sunday (August 27th).

The appearance was a surprise, marking the first time Johnson has performed the track live since March of 2016 when the rocker was informed by doctors that he needed to quit performing live or risk a total loss of his hearing. Axl Rose filled in for Johnson on the band’s tour while Johnson underwent treatment for his hearing loss.

The rapid return of Johnson to the stage is in part due to consulting with an in-ear technology specialist last June.

In May, Johnson joined Robert Plant and Paul Rodgers in Oxford, England to sing Money (That’s What I Want), his first official return to the stage since his initial announcement.

Johnson thanked Muse for allowing him to join them for the song, saying, “That means a lot to me, thank you so much, thank you boys.”

There is still no word on what Johnson’s performance means for a return to his status as the frontman of AC/DC, but it’s something for fans to hold onto.
