It’s been 20 years to the day (August 31) since the fatal Paris car crash that took the life of Princess Diana and changed the course of history. To mark the anniversary of her passing, her friend, Elton John, shared a photo of himself and the Princess of Wales to his Instagram account.

Famously, Elton reworked his 1973 hit Candle In The Wind, originally about the passing of Marilyn Monroe, into a new tribute for his late friend. The tribute song actually came out of a moment when John was forbidden to sing the original tribute in Westminster Abbey because the lyrics referenced a Hollywood star. He and longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin reworked the lyrics within hours, and the new version became even more beloved than the original.

The song has sold more than 33 million copies worldwide to date.

“20 years ago today, the world lost an angel #RIP,” Elton captions the post.
