Minnesotans Start Petition For New Statue Of Prince

By: Renee Grant

As monuments all over the country are being removed or replaced, a new petition is calling for a statue erected to honor His Purple Badness.

The petition, which has earned about 4,200 signatures of the 5,000 signature goal, asks that a statue of Christopher Columbus be replaced with one of Prince, citing that “Prince represents Minnesota values and Columbus does not.”

Community organizer Wintana Melkin created the petition and tells Watch the Yard, “I put the petition together because I wanted to see someone, Prince, at the capitol because he represents a part of Minnesota that we are all proud of.”

Once the desired number of signatures is reached, the petition will be presented to Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton. While the statue may not be replaced, the idea of a monument to honor Minnesota’s most famous resident is one that every fan should love.
