A new biopic about the life of the legendary Curtis Mayfield is in the works thanks to Lionel Richie.

Richie has been granted the rights to the story by the Curtis Mayfield Estate and will collaborate with Mayfield’s widow Altheida and other family and friends on the story.

“It’s an honor for me to bring the life of one of my idols and friend to the screen,” Richie tells Deadline. “I’m so grateful to be working closely with Altheida Mayfield, Cheaa Mayfield, and the Curtis Mayfield Estate and couldn’t be happier to be moving forward on this amazing project about a one-of-a-kind music genius.”

“It’s time to celebrate and re-evaluate Curtis’ legacy,” Altheida adds. “For years, too many others have tried to claim what he alone did. He was a genius, always stood on his own.”

The film will be produced by Richie’s RichLion Productions and will follow Mayfield’s beginnings as a teenage member of The Impressions through his incredibly successful solo career.

Mayfield was paralyzed from the neck down in 1990 after lighting equipment at a show in Brooklyn, NY fell on him during his performance. He continued to record music after the accident up until his death from diabetes complications in 1999 at age 57.

Casting information has not been announced.
