Before Gavin was born, he was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease, a group of inherited blood disorders that is characterized by chronic anemia, periodic episodes of pain and other complications. From the time he was an infant, Gavin would experience terrible pain often called ‘crises’.  When Gavin was two years old his mom, Keisha, brought him to CHOP for a second opinion for a heart condition that is unrelated to the Sickle Cell Disease. CHOP doctors told her that Gavin was hours away from having a life threatening stroke. After the care they received that day, Keisha transferred all care to CHOP where Gavin receives blood transfusions every three weeks to manage the Sickle Cell Disease. Now a 10 year boy, he is remarkably mature and compassionate. He often reminds his mom when she is nervous before a tough procedure ‘Mommy, I’m going to be ok.’
