When Vivian was born at 29 weeks into her mom’s pregnancy, doctors didn’t think that she would make it through the night. To everyone’s surprise, she survived. After her birth, she was diagnosed with a number of complex medical conditions. Among them, doctors identified a malformation in her lymphatic system, the system that helps keep bodily fluid levels in balance and defends the body against infections. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia was the only hospital with doctors who could treat Vivian’s condition. Although it was difficult choice, Vivian’s family chose to move from Indiana to Philadelphia so she could receive care from multiple specialists at CHOP. Now two years old, Vivian can’t speak but still expresses tremendous joy everyday through laughter.
