AJ's Story

November 26, 2018

AJ’s parents are both in the medical field, so they understood the risks when AJ was diagnosed with CDH. CDH is congenital diaphragmatic hernia and it occurs in utero when the baby’s diaphragm does not form properly. Organs are pushed up abnormally into the chest cavity and the baby risks poor lung development and a precarious future.

CHOP offered the chance for fetal surgery to give AJ the best opportunity to survive and thrive. It was hard to imagine surgery while AJ was still in the womb but with the help of the CHOP team, mom knew she could do it.  And she wanted to provide her baby the best chance at life.

Mom reflects on her journey from learning AJ was in trouble to seeing him walking and talking now.
