Maddie's grand mom Lisa, who is also her adoptive guardian, remembers the phone call. She says that when the pediatrician calls on a Sunday night, you know it's not good news and she was right. In the midst of adopting Maddie, a routine blood test showed that something was wrong. Further tests revealed it was leukemia.

Her prognosis was good and Lisa took family medical leave to stay with Maddie in the hospital and help her through her treatment.

The Social Work department helped Lisa as soon as Maddie was diagnosed and Child Life made sure Maddie was happy and occupied while she was in the hospital or receiving treatment at CHOP Voorhees Specialty Care Center.
